We won’t be covering wired controllers that connect to the Switch’s dock, as they don’t offer significant savings and tend to be quite basic. (PowerA and PDP make decent wired options if you need one, but unless you strongly prefer not to recharge your controllers, going wireless is usually a better choice.)
If you choose to buy a third-party wireless controller (one not made by Nintendo), there are a few features it may lack unless stated otherwise:

Beyond the Switch, the Pro Controller is compatible with a variety of other platforms like PC, Android, SteamOS, and even Apple devices running the latest versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
While it’s a great controller, a few extra features would have been welcome at its price point, such as programmable buttons or a 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, wireless audio through the controller isn’t possible for the Switch yet, although you can connect wireless headphones via Bluetooth—just keep in mind you’ll be limited to using two controllers at once when doing so.
Hori Split Pad Pro
Hori Split Pad Pro is a unique alternative to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, designed specifically for those who prefer to play in handheld mode. This controller splits into two separate pieces, sliding into the sides of the Switch console like Joy-Cons, making it a comfortable option for gamers looking for something different.

Be aware that this attachment can cost more than a Switch Pro Controller, and while it does add a 3.5mm headphone jack, it doesn’t include features like rumble or motion controls.

Among the various variants available, the Bluetooth model is highly recommended over the 2.4GHz or wired versions due to its dual connectivity options and the inclusion of GuliKit Hall effect sticks, which prevent drift—a common issue in many controllers. The analog sticks are designed for comfort, featuring just the right amount of resistance and a concave top, although they might feel slightly short on the sides. The buttons offer excellent travel, and the analog triggers have a satisfying resistance.
Customization options are extensive. You can adjust button mapping profiles, set up macros, and tweak vibration intensity and stick/trigger sensitivity through the Ultimate Software app available on mobile or PC. The controller includes a dedicated button for swapping between three profiles on the fly, as well as an extra turbo button that can be remapped to suit your gaming style.

8BitDo Pro 2 is an excellent alternative to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, offering many similar features at a more affordable price, all while incorporating a DualShock-style layout.

Nitro Deck or Nitro Deck Plus
We really like the CRKD Nitro Deck here! It’s a cradle-style controller designed to hold your Nintendo Switch securely between two Hall effect sticks. This controller comes with a standard set of face buttons, four back buttons that you can program to your liking, turbo functionality, gyro motion controls, and rumble features.
One cool feature is passthrough charging, which means you can charge your Switch while using the controller. However, it doesn’t support passthrough video, so you can’t use it as a dock for playing games on your TV. If you’re looking for more features, the Nitro Deck Plus is a step up. It includes passthrough video with a USB-C to HDMI adapter, Bluetooth connectivity, and adjustable vibration intensity and analog sensitivity.
While we’ve noticed these improvements, we do wish the passthrough solution was more refined. Additionally, there are some ergonomic concerns, especially on the right side, where the placement of the analog stick and buttons can be uncomfortable to use for extended periods.
GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro
We recently tested the GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro, priced at $49.99, to see how it stacks up. This controller has many features similar to the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro, including remappable buttons, Hall effect sticks, and two macro buttons. However, it also boasts dedicated vibration motors in the triggers, which is a feature the GuliKit lacks.
Despite these advantages, the GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro falls short in one area: the buttons feel a bit mushy. GameSir markets the extra padding under the buttons as a feature that softens the impact, but we found it detracted from our overall experience.
Additionally, while the controller works well with the Nintendo Switch, its button labeling is similar to Microsoft’s layout, which might confuse some users who struggle to memorize the button placements. We also encountered some frustration with the resyncing process when switching from a mobile device or Windows PC back to the Switch.
GameCube Style Wireless Controller
We also recently tested several wireless controllers from PowerA, including the GameCube Style Wireless Controller and a Pikachu-themed version of the standard PowerA Enhanced Wireless, both priced at $59.99. While we appreciate the fun designs of PowerA’s controllers, they don’t quite match the quality of the other models we’ve recommended, which is disappointing, especially since some of them cost nearly the same.
The GameCube-style wireless controller does a good job of recreating the original, making it a great choice for fans of Super Smash Bros. However, it’s pretty basic—it lacks features like rumble, NFC, and IR capabilities. If you’re looking to recapture that old-school feeling and don’t already have a Bluetooth-based alternative, this controller is an easy way to do so, especially when paired with 8BitDo’s USB Adapter 2.
